Welcome to City Blooming: Sizzling July in Your Urban Garden 🔥

Hello, city & urban gardeners, Cassie here, welcoming you to the July edition of the City Blooming newsletter.

July truly tests the mettle of our city gardens across the U.S. With the summer sun blazing, this month is all about sustaining the lush growth we’ve worked so hard to achieve. Whether you’re coaxing a second flush of blooms from your patio plants or diligently tending to your vertical vegetable garden, July calls for strategic care and smart gardening techniques to keep your urban oasis thriving.

At City Blooming, we're committed to helping you navigate the unique challenges and opportunities of summer gardening in limited spaces. This July, we’re focusing on:

  • Water Wisdom for Warm Weather: Essential strategies for efficient watering, especially for hanging plants and containers, to combat evaporation and keep your plants hydrated without waste.
  • Maximizing Summer Harvests: Tips for continuous harvesting of herbs, fruits, and vegetables to encourage further production and get the most out of your thriving small urban garden.
  • Mid-Season Plant Health Checks: Guidance on identifying and addressing common summer pests or nutrient deficiencies to ensure your plants remain vigorous and healthy.
  • Creative Cooling Solutions: Innovative ideas for shading sensitive plants or adding small water features, drawing inspiration from our blog, "DIY: Create a Mini Indoor Water Feature. A Step by Step Guide", to help beat the heat in your urban space.

We have posted some exciting new articles. To view these and others, please scroll down our home page at City Blooming until you get to the Latest Posts section.

We are excited to share this month's advice, tips, and tricks for Heat & Shade Solutions

1. Provide Strategic Shade with Fabric or Companion Plants
Use shade cloth, an umbrella, or even strategically placed taller plants to cast shade over heat-sensitive crops during the hottest part of the day. This simple trick can prevent leaf scorch and reduce water loss in containers.

2. Relocate Potted Plants to Cooler Spots
If your plants are in containers, take advantage of their mobility. Move them to shadier spots on your balcony or patio, or even indoors during extreme heatwaves. East-facing spots get morning sun but afternoon shade, which is ideal.

3. Use Light-Colored Pots and Mulch
Dark-colored containers absorb more heat, which can cook delicate roots. Switch to lighter-colored pots or paint existing dark ones a lighter shade. Adding a layer of light-colored mulch (such as straw or pine shavings) also reflects heat and helps keep soil cooler.

4. Increase Air Circulation and Evaporative Cooling
Ensure good air circulation around your plants, especially in crowded urban spaces, to prevent stagnant, hot air. For an extra cooling boost, mist foliage in the early morning or late evening; as the water evaporates, it can help cool the plants.

Whether it’s through planting native flowers or learning sustainable watering techniques, City Blooming is here to support you every step of the way.
