Hello, urban gardeners, Cassie here, welcoming you to the September edition of the City Blooming newsletter.
As summer’s peak warmth begins to wane, September invites us to savor the rich harvests and prepare our city gardens for the cooler months ahead. It’s the perfect time to enjoy late-season tomatoes, peppers, and herbs while planting cool-weather crops like kale and spinach for a vibrant autumn display.
This month, we are here to guide you through the seasonal transition with topics including:
- Autumn Planting Essentials: Learn what to sow now—from leafy greens to garlic—to ensure a thriving fall and winter garden.
- Harvest and Preserve: Tips for Gathering Your Summer Produce and Preserving It Through Canning, Freezing, or Drying.
- Garden Cleanup & Prep: Strategies for cleaning up spent plants, adding compost, and readying containers for the next season.
- Fall Styling Ideas: Creative Ways to Decorate Your Balcony or Patio with Pumpkins, Ornamental Grasses, and Late-Blooming Flowers.
This past month, we completed some exciting new articles, including What is Plant Food? The ABCs of Feeding Your Foliage and Transforming Your Space with Sustainable Home Decor.

For this month's advice, tips and tricks, we are excited to share the four Fall Styling Ideas.
Here are our Top four:
1. Layer with Seasonal Foliage
Introduce texture and color by layering autumnal foliage, such as ornamental grasses, painted ferns, and Japanese maple branches. Arrange taller grasses or branches at the back, medium-height perennials in the middle, and low groundcovers or pumpkins in front to create depth.
2. Incorporate Warm-Hued Containers
Swap out summer planters for containers in rich, warm tones—think terracotta, deep reds, and burnt oranges. Fill them with seasonal favorites like pansies, ornamental kale, and chrysanthemums for a cohesive fall palette.
3. Add Cozy Decorative Accents
Weave in cozy touches such as burlap wraps around pots, rustic wooden crates, and galvanized metal buckets. Accent seating areas with weather-resistant throw pillows in plaids or autumn prints, and drape a soft outdoor blanket over a bench or chair.
4. Use Harvest Elements as Decor
Embrace the harvest theme by integrating pumpkins, gourds, and corn stalks. Group various sizes and shapes of plants on steps or patio corners, and intersperse them with lanterns or fairy lights to add warmth and ambiance as the days grow shorter.
